A Cozy Home for My Nook

It’s amazing what I can accomplish when I don’t have committments outside of work. After blogging last night, I got to work on finishing my Nook case. I cut down the fabric and started quilting. Since I only need a scrap-size piece of batting, I had many choices to choose from. I went with fusible batting. It was very easy to work with and didn’t require any pinning.

Originally, I planned on quilting a stippling design. It would be easy. Then I decided that it would look better if I echoed the diamond lines. I love it. It adds to the quilt design. Instead of being a separate design on its own.

Even though the back side of my quilting was nice and neat, I added a lining to hide all seam. The only thing I would do differently is make my top fabric a bit larger. When using diamonds, it’s hard to get a good measurement on fabric size. I cut it a bit too close on the top and bottom. It would have been better to have one more row of diamonds to increase the height.

If you’re looking to made a case for your Nook, Kindle, iPad, or other tablet device, I recommend the following forumla for calculating dimensions. First visit the web and get the offical measurements from the manufacture. This will save you a bit of grief.

Width = (width + depth) x 2 + .5″ ease + seam allowances = fabric width

Height = height + depth  + .5″ ease + seam allowances = fabric height

On this project, I ironed my seams open. So I used a .5″ seam allowance. I find a .25″ seam challenging to iron open, or at least they require more time than I’m willing to invest. Plus they can curl a bit. I’m happy with the way mine turned out. The seams have stayed flat, and I don’t feel annoyed by their bulk.
