Moving from Traditional to Modern

While browsing some new-to-me blogs, I found a tutorial for a Cathedral window block at A La Mode Fabrics. I was immediately drawn to the block. It reminded me of a block I pieced together five or six years ago. I made it after seeing the instructions in a magazine, Quiltmaker, I think.

Now I realize it isn’t the same block. However, both blocks have curved lines that are made by folding the fabric on the bias, a fun technique.

The more I look at my block, I realize that my block could look “modern” just by choosing different fabrics and by using them wisely. Of course, I’d have to remember how I made it. I need to add this to my idea book. At least it would make cool pillows.

Now that I’ve dug out this block from the depths of my storage bins, I’ve decided to do something with it. Right now it measures 18.5″ unfinished. While it could be a pillow, I don’t think I would ever use it. My fabric preferences have changed too much. Instead, I think I’ll just quilt it. My quilting can always use practice. At 18″ finished it will make a nice  doll quilt.

Oh, I do plan on making some pillows with the cathedral window block. It’s just cool to ignore.
