Starting a Scrappy Log Cabin
Several years ago (I think), Melly and Me started a Scrappy Log Cabin challenge. Immediately, I knew that I had the scraps to make my own version, but I didn’t jump on it. Well now that my scraps are organized and ready to be pressed into service, I’m starting my own log cabin quilt.
Plan A
I wanted to use my 2″ strips. I set out to make 6 blocks, using the same fabric for the center fabric. Here’s the results:

Kind of blah. I needed something with a bit more pop.
Plan B
I decided to used my 1.5″ strips and a 3″ center block. Instead of just choosing a color haphazardly, I sort the scraps by color family. Here’s two blocks:

Already, I’m happier. While the green is more muted, it still has a bit of life to it. So far, I’ve made 6 pink block and several green blocks are in progress. My 1.5″ scrap pile is the smallest pile I have. So this quilt is going to be on the small side. Of course, the end result is a pure mystery. It all depends on how many block I get.
When it’s time to sew it all together, I’m thinking about setting them together like this:

Is the black too much? I hope not. I really like it. If you’d like to see more scrappy log cabin quilts, check out the flickr group.

I think the black is perfect!
