Scraps of Fabric

The process of making the Colored Bar-code Quilt changed what I thought about scrap quilts. Previously, I didn’t appreciate scrap quilts. I thought they looked disjointed and unfinished. Now I think they’re amazing. I see the beauty of a quilt that’s made out of fabric that would otherwise be discarded as waste. The current economic climate also influences my thoughts. I have a good supply of fabric. I need to put it to good use, and really appreciate it.

Before I could start using my scraps, I needed to organize them. I had a huge box with fabric that was too big to throw away, yet too small to really be useful. I cut every piece of fabric into one of 4 sizes: 2.5″ strip, 2″ strip, 1.5″ strip, and 2.5″ square. I think I watched all the Harry Potter movies as I ironed and cut the scraps.

From here, I made the hexagon quilt, which I love. Even though it isn’t quilted I want to make another one. I still have a lot of 2.5″ strips. So this is more than possible. I also started a project out of the 1.5″ strips. I’ll share it later this week. (I can’t reveal everything in one blog entry.) And some of the 2.5″ squares are being turned into Christmas presents for my neighbors.

It’s fun to make something out of nothing.
