Quilting Magazines

Sooner after I started quilting, I realized that quilting magazines were a great source of inspiration. First I subscribe to Quiltmaker. At the time, it was the only magazine that consistently supply quilting designs to go along with the actual quilt pattern. After two years or so, quilting designs aside, Quiltmaker just didn’t do it for me. I deemed every new issue boring. Time to move on.

I moved on to Fons and Porter. Fons and Porter entertained me for at least 3 years, probably closer to 4. I actually made things from this magazine. Over the last 6 months, the magazine hasn’t inspired me to make any thing or even try a new technique. Once again, I think it’s time for a new magazine.

I’ve been evaluating a couple options, trying to choose just one. (Based on the fact that I can’t throw away past issues, I try to limit myself to just one subscription. Then I can pick up other issues as desired from the bookstore.) The contenders are:

  • Quilter’s Home: Every quilter should take a look at this magazine. It’s a laugh-out-loud read. The editor, Mark Lipinski, has a fresh outlook on quilting. Interesting, there are only a couple of quilting patterns per each issue. Yet I find the magazine inspiring and informative. The latest issue has a great review on printable fabric sheets.
  • American Patchwork & Quilting: I consider this magazine traditional. Yet they manage to squeak in enough new fun things to peak my interest, like patterns by Weeks Ringle from Fun Quilts.
  • Mary Engelbreit’s Home Companion: OK, it’s not a quilting magazine. Yet, it inspires me to create, and really that’s the end goal.

OK, I really need make a decision before I spend all my money at the bookstore. Does anybody have some sage advice?

My favorite is APQ. I subscribe to that one. The rest of them I leaf through when I’m at the library. If there is something that really catches my eye in one of the rest then I’ll go out and buy the issue. My favorites, though, are the special issues put out by APQ and F&P that come out once a quarter. They have fun projects beyond just quilts.

You should get all three they each provide a varied background and complement each other. Also you should check out the ezine at http://www.fibreandstitch.com they don’t do much with quilts but they have some fun ideas for working with fiber (or fibre.)

I like Home Companion and American Patchwork, but I chose Quilter’s Home because of the content. I had the same problem, I wasn’t being inspired and I actually pieced up QH thinking I was getting Home Companion. I was so pleasantly surprised and renewed!!! Mark’s magazine is written for the modern and practical quilter. I love the decorating tips and the product information. I have tons of books and patterns, I need INSPIRATION and Quilter’s Home has become my muse. That’s why I subscribed to Quilter’s Home

I also vote for Quilter’s Home. It has some good articles, and lots of fun stuff too. Mark always makes me laugh, which is a very good thing!
