B is for Black

I love the color black. I like to wear it, use it my quilts, and decorate with it-in small dosages. The thing about black is a little goes a long way. I really discovered this in making quilts. A good quilt with have a wide variety of color value. Most quilts have a lot of light and medium valued fabric, but no dark valued fabric. By adding black, all values are present, and the eye can see the different patterns in quilts.

Today I was reminded of the power of black. I’ve been working on a scrap quilt. I completed the stripped pieces.

Then auditioned them with black, white, and dark blue background fabric.

Before I started the audition, I wanted white to win. I have the fabric on hand to finish the quilt top. After looking at all three pictures, I admitted defeat. Black won. Unfortanetly, I held my audition at 6:30. Thirty minutes after the closest quilt store closed. On Wednesday I’ll pick up some black fabric.

I should mention the con to using this much black in a quilt. It shows every piece of lint and cat hair that it comes in contact with. Actually it’s a lint magnet. This quilt will need to live in a pet free house.
