Made by Me

After spending the last week camping, I needed a quick craft fix. I decided to make labels for things that I make. This is what I came up with.

This isn’t the best picture. First, I created the image in Photoshop. I wanted to keep it simple. I decided that just using my name was all that really needed to be said. So I elimated the graphics that said “Made by…”. I printed the graphics on transfer paper. If you do this remember to make a mirror image of whatever you are printing. I ironed the transfer on to 1″ twill tape for the tabs and 1/2″ twill tape for the long labels.

I have one concern. I used polyester twill tape. That’s all that Joann’s had in stock. It might be all that they even carry. Ugh. So far it looks ok. I’m not sure how they’ll hold up in the wash.

In the future, I’d like to order custom woven tags. Until I can justify the expense, I’ll have fun playing with transfer paper and twill tape.

Finally! Ikea is in town

Through the course of reading many blogs, I started to covet the wonderful stuff that can only be purchased at Ikea. I knew that my home would be organized and look just as cool as everybody else’s. Now I have my chance to make it all happen. On May 23, the Ikea in Draper, Utah opened. Yea! (loud clapping in the background) A couple weeks later, I made my first of many trips to Ikea.
So what did I buy? Just a few things. I bought a few Branäs baskets, spice jars, and a cute bamboo plant.

The bamboo went to my office to live in a sunless environment called my cube. The baskets are waiting for me to put fabric inside. (I’m not sure what is holding me back on this one.) The spice jars have been put to work.

The Ikea hacker blog inspired me to personalize my spice jars to suit my tastes. I created one of a kind labels just for the Rajtan spice jars, not a true Ikea hack, but a nice embellishment.

I’ll be honest these spice jars were not my first choice. However the price was right. With the addition of the labels, I actually like these labels even more. I’ve decided to share my work. You can download a pdf here to print your own labels.

Tips:

  1. Print on full-sheet labels, like Avery 8165
  2. The circles measure 2″. I trimmed them to 1 7/8 when I cut them out. The labels fit better, and there were no white edges.

If somebody figures out how to make the top of the lids a smooth surface, please tell me. I really want to put a label on the lid. However, I need to get past the groove. I know that has to be an inexpenive way to fill-in the groove.

My First Pincushion

OK, I know I’m a little late to join the pincushion craze. I had the best of intentions to make pincushions before now. For some reason it just didn’t happen until I found myself wanting to do something by hand and holding this pattern (by Blooming Stitches) in my hand. It all came together.

Pincushion #1

Of course I’ve added my own personal touch to my pincushion. Iused new hand dyed flossed that was burning a hole in my pocket, and I added the buttons to control the puffiness.

Pincushion: 4 sidesAll it needs now are some flower pins or maybe I should make my own special pin. I’ve seen others use that shrink a dink stuff and sculty clay. My niece will be in town soon. I bet I could talk her into playing with clay.
