Baby Quilt #1: Quilt Sandwich

I’m moving right along with the baby quilts. On Friday I finished piecing Baby Quilt #2. No pictures today. Yesterday I purchased the necessary quilting supplies, specifically thread. Somehow I manage to quilt most of my quilts on my domestic sewing machine. I have mixed feelings about this process. I enjoy the fact that I can finish my own quilts. I like being apart of the whole process. On the other hand, I really wish I had a long arm quilting machine. One day. Until then I’ll go through the process of working with my domestic sewing machine.

Tonight I spend my time preparing my quilt sandwich. First I taped the back of the quilt to my floor. I’m really thankful for my hardwood floor. Without it, the step would be even harder. I’m always surprised at how taut I can get the back. I’m even more surprised when my cats let me complete this step.

Quilt Back

Next, I lay down the batting and the quilt top. I press as needed. The batting provides enough friction that I can lay the top down without feeling like it needs to be taped as well.

3 Quilt Layers

When I’m happy with everything, I start pinning. I try to work in a circle while keeping my quilting design in mind.

 Safety Pins

I don’t want to move pins while I’m trying to quilt. At the point I must state that curved safety pins and a tool to help close the pins are a necessity. Without them, your fingers would be mush. Also spirng for the nickel plated pins. They slide through the quilt layers with ease. The plain brass pins drag through the layers. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way.

Now, I’m off to start quilting!
